Parents Reveal Secrets of European Languages ! | On Tuesday, 26th September, boys and staff at Papplewick School, Ascot, celebrated European Day of Languages with workshops led by parents.

In a Turkish workshop led by Mr Onur Takmak, Year 8 boys were introduced to ten interesting facts about the Turkish culture. These included the origin of the language, which is Latin-based; the fabled city of Troy being located in Turkey; and the country expanding between Europe and Asia. The boys also found out that each Turkish name has a meaning: for example Ruzgar means Wind while Deniz means Sea.

In Polish, for the Year 7 boys Mrs Ewa Lazar touched on the origins of the name Polska (Poland). She explained how, from an omen about three brothers Lech, Czech and Rus, Poland came to be. She also discussed famous Polish names such as Chopin and Kopernikus (the mathematician and astronomer). A traditional meal of goulash was served to boys and staff.

In a German workshop, Mrs Carola Babcock played some tongue-twisters with one of the longest German sentences and touched on the sound and phoneme variations within the German language. The boys found out if their names had an equivalent in the German language and how to pronounce it.

In the Italian workshop led by Mr Trerotoli, Years 2, 3 and 4 learned to count up 10, how to pronounce the most common Italian words used in the UK (pizza, pasta and spaghetti to name a few). The boys were also quizzed about their knowledge of Italian football.

The winners of the costume competition were Monty McLaren-Clark who dressed up as a guard, Sebastian Cunningham Day as an English soldier and Mustapha and Ranbir (Year 2) with a joint third place.

Papplewick is a day, weekly, and full boarding preparatory school for around 200 boys between the ages of 6 and 13. Situated in 15 acres of land opposite Ascot Racecourse in Berkshire, Papplewick has an excellent record for academic achievement and feeds many of the UK’s top independent senior schools including Eton, Harrow, Winchester, Wellington, Stowe and Bradfield.

In the last two years the school has maintained its academic record, gaining no less than 26 awards to top independent schools, including three King’s Scholarships to Eton. Through its strong commitment to sports, the school also builds skills of teamwork, sportsmanship and responsibility.

As well as academic, sporting and cultural excellence, Papplewick aims to provide boys with the confidence and security they need to fulfil their potential, and the school strives to promote enthusiasm for life, contribution to the community and kindness to others amongst all its pupils.

A report by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) in 2013 remarks that relationships between pupils and teachers: ‘are an outstanding strength of the school and are seminal in creating the strong sense of a mutually supportive and trusting community.’
