A full planning application was granted in 2017, for the 'Installation of Bronze War Horse stature and stone plinth with associated landscape surrounds' on the Heatherwood roundabout, London Road, Ascot. (Application No.: 17/00188 ).  The sculptress is Susan Leyland who held her first exhibition in 1998, exhibiting internationally including in Italy, France and England.  The horse is one and a half times life size  on a  2m high plinth. ; Susan Leyland’s sculptures are unique pieces, modelled in an artist semi‐fireclay of different colours.  Each sculpture takes about a month of painstaking work to make.

Work Starts on Heatherwood Roundabout Monument 2018

The statue is to be erected in recognition of the eight million horses killed in the First World War. The  location was chosen for a piece of public art - at one of the gateways to Ascot -  visited by thousands of visitors interested in horses.

The application was debated at a full RBWM Council meeting and granted permission in 2017. The debate was acrimonious, with  resident, Dr.Baylis listing a string of objections, along with SPAE and Sunninghill & Ascot Parish Council - who were not consulted and whose lengthy objections initially failed to make it onto the Council Agenda papers.

The arguments include wrong place, wrong time, traffic hazard, bad use of public section 106 money -  versus a stunning gateway to Ascot feature and a vital national monument for the huge sacrifice that horses were forced to make in WWI.  Replicas of the statue will raise money for Jenny Seagrove's charity  - The Mane Chance' and Mayor Sayonara Luxton's charity - The Household Cavalry.

An earlier 2015 planning application, for a water fountain with jets and lights, was withdrawn.
