Coworth Flexlands School is delighted that Mrs Alison Davey has been accredited with the Archimedes Forest School Award following her successful completion of the Archimedes Forest School Practitioner Level 3 course. The Forest School philosophy is very much a child-centred approach to learning in the freedom and space of a woodland setting, delivered by trained practitioners. Children get to create, touch, feel, smell and invent in the ever changing moods and marvels, challenges and natural wonder of our outdoor world. At Coworth Flexlands School, with two practitioners on our staff, Forest School is taught as part of the curriculum and a favourite among all children from Nursery to age 11 years. Every Thursday a year group ventures into one of our woodland areas to, for example, create dens, discover survival techniques using tools, learn knotting and whittling, build bug hotels, invent stories around stick characters and homes or be artistic with the autumn leaves. Mrs Davey delights, “It is so rewarding watching the children immersed in their own little, natural world creating a “hedgehog home”, then leaping excitedly into building a den with their friends to survive the showers, or more recently the snowfall!” Forest School happens in all weathers. The seasons offer such variety of experience. As promoted by Forest School, we see our children develop life skills such as self-esteem, confidence & resilience. Through co-operation, exploration, creativity, risk and challenge they become well-rounded individuals. The children develop a love and respect for the natural world and environment.”
