An outstanding primary school in Ascot is set to increase in size and accommodate more pupils after a recommendation to expand it was approved last night at cabinet.

The Royal Borough consulted parents, staff, governors, dioceses and community organisations earlier this summer. Nearly 240 residents responded, via an online survey, paper forms and emails.

The most popular option, chosen by 55 per cent as their first preference choice, was an expansion of Cheapside CE Primary School (option A).

Feasibility work has shown that expanding Cheapside Primary is possible by building three new classrooms.

Cllr Natasha Airey, cabinet member for children’s services, said: “We really appreciate all the feedback we had on this consultation and we know how important choosing a primary school is for parents. We always try and give as many families as possible their preferred school and this exciting new expansion project for Cheapside will allow us to continue to honour more parent’s wishes.”

Other options considered were: expanding South Ascot Village Primary School (option B); expanding Holy Trinity CE Primary School, Sunningdale (option C) and building a brand new school (option D).

These options may be investigated further later on, as up to 1,300 new dwellings are expected to be built in Ascot, Sunninghill and Sunningdale between now and 2030. This will further increase the demand for primary school places. It is not yet known when these new homes will be built.

The council anticipates that these extra primary school places at Cheapside will be created in time for the September 2017 intake.
