The Local Round of the Rotary Young Musician Competition was held on the evening of Tuesday, February 23rd 2016, organised by the Rotary Club of Ascot, assisted by the Rotary Club of Wokingham and hosted by Charters School . It was a superb competition, featuring 11 performances, up to ten minutes in length (including an introduction).

There was unusual musical variety this year, with four vocalists, a piano, a bassoon, a violin, a cello,  xylophone/snare drum, classical guitar and flute. The music was of a very high standard, as usual  (Previous winner, Robert Cheung, went on to win the National round) . Master of ceremonies, event organiser and Ascot Rotarian, Tony Love, provided background information on the music and composers, between performances, and it all made for an extremely entertaining evening for the audience.  The judges - Geoff Horton, Jan Jackman and  Chris Goodwin - had a very difficult job but, in the end the Runner Up Vocalist was Phoebe Parker  of  Heathfield School - for her 'eccentric' performance of Ave Maria and Poor Wandering One ; Winning Vocalist was Charlotte Kilpatrick of St.Mary's School, Ascot - for her 'strong performance' of of music by Handel and Vaughan Williams.

In the Instrumental Section, a Special Commendation went to bassoonist, Lauren Martin of The Holt School - for a 'good performance', displaying her range of ability and future potential,  Runner Up was flautist, Katherine Beine of St.Mary's. The judges  praised her  'outstanding' 'surety of performance' - 'one to watch in the future'. But the clear winner was  violinist, Rosanna Suvini for her 'virtuosity'. Rosanna played Brahms' Scherzo from FAE Sonata and Danse Espagnole by Manuel de Falla. She gave a thoroughly confident and entertaining performance, preceded by a very eloquent personal introduction.

The prizes were presented by judge- Geoff Horton  and Alan Clare - President of the Rotary Club of Ascot .
