Work starts on Berystede roundabout

Residents will have an easier journey thanks to a roundabout being installed at the junction of A330 Devenish Road / Brockenhurst Road with Bagshot Road, Ascot.

The new roundabout, which is being built following local concerns, aims to:

  • make a safer access for vehicles emerging from Bagshot Road and Sunninghill High Street
  • create a safer road crossing for residents, particularly pupils of schools in the area including Charters School. A zebra crossing is being installed for easy access for pedestrians.
  • slow traffic speeds, further making the road safe.

The scheme, expected to be completed by spring, will cost in the region of £350,000, funded by a combination of S106 developer contributions and grant funding.

Traffic lights are in place and are being manually operated during peak times.

Cllr Colin Rayner, cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “We have listened to the concerns of residents in the area and I am delighted that work has begun on the roundabout.

“Not only will the roundabout make the road safer for pedestrians but also for vehicles so everyone wins.

“Unfortunately as a result of the work there are likely to be some delays in the area but we hope residents will bear with us while we complete this important scheme. We hope to clear the road temporarily for the busy Christmas period.”

Cllr Christine Bateson, lead member for Ascot and the Sunnings, said: “This is an important scheme for the area and one residents were keen to see happen so I am really pleased that work is under way.

“It is a busy junction used regularly by pupils from many schools and I am pleased we are able to make their journey or walk to school safer as well as improving the junction for other residents travelling and traffic.”
